Tesla, Insurance, Login, Details, Secure
If we’re your Tesla insurance provider, remember that it’s in our best interests to keep your pride and joy as safe as possible - so we’re extra careful.
Our experience with Tesla owners is that they’re inquisitive, forward-thinking, and often quite technically-minded, so we thought we’d transparently outline how we deal with your details. If you’re not too technical, some of this may be a little in-depth for your taste. Feel free to get in touch (via email or live chat) and we’ll do our best to explain.
To connect to your Tesla, our systems use your Tesla.com login details to generate an access token. Your login details are used once to get this token and then automatically discarded. We never see or store your Tesla.com login credentials.
The access token allows access to your Tesla through the same way as the official Tesla mobile app. The token we use is valid for a maximum of 45 days, after which we’ll renew it providing you’ve still allowed us access. We encrypt all tokens using AES-256 encryption or better (AES stands for Advanced Encryption Standard - it’s a strong method for making sure no one can read your token).
Unlike the official Tesla mobile app, we only ask Tesla to provide a small amount of information from your car:
-
The make, model, year and Vehicle Identification Number (to make sure we have the right car)
-
The odometer readings (to measure your mileage)
-
The 'longitude' and 'latitude' readings (so that you can use the 'Find My Car' function, and to help us track it down if it's stolen)
This is detailed in Section 4 of our Privacy Policy, which forms part of the contract between us and our members. We’re ISO 27001 certified, so we have to meet very high standards when it comes to protecting your personal data. We’re also regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, which means we’re also expected to go above and beyond to ensure we treat our members fairly.
Put those three things together, and when we say we won’t use your Tesla access token for anything other than taking odometer and GPS readings, you know we mean it.
Is there anything else I can do to protect my Tesla?
There certainly is, and we’d recommend every Tesla owner take extra steps to protect their car. Please see our FAQ here: "What should I do to help protect my Tesla?"
