Firstly, stop in a safe place and put on your hazard lights. If you hit any of the following animals you’ll need to report this to the police:
- Dogs.
- Horses.
- Cattle.
- Pigs.
- Goats.
- Sheep.
- Donkeys.
- Mules.
You should do this as quickly as possible, whether the animal is injured or killed.
You'll also need to let us know. Call our claims line on 0330 088 3838, managed by our independent claims partner Auxillis. They're open 24/7, all year round. You should report the incident to our claims line whether you need to make a claim or not. Our claims team can record the incident and advise you if any further steps are needed.
For more information on the steps you must take to report accidents involving animals, you can check out the Government’s advice here. This includes useful telephone numbers for reporting accidents involving animals not listed above, and how to get help if an animal is injured.
Though not on the list above, deer are another important animal to look out for as collisions are getting more and more common. You can find our tips on avoiding deer collisions here.
